This month Icarus Complex Magazine launches a new series of conversations led by writer-designer-surfer Lukas Brunner.

In dialogue with athlete-environmentalists, Brunner explores how sports cultures—surfing, climbing, skiing, snowboarding—forge deep relationships with land and seascapes. Each story weaves personal journeys with broader systemic challenges, offering fresh perspectives on the sport–environment connection. The series begins with hopeful ocean voices from small island nations to continental coastlines, sharing firsthand experiences of environmental change, intimate knowledge of coastlines, and wisdom gained from time in the water. By amplifying these stories of hope, we aim to spark collective action at a critical moment for our ocean’s survival.
