Afsaneh has been actively working in the magazine world since 2005. She served as both the editor of nico magazine and associate publisher of Twin magazine, and has passionately written about the creative industries since then. In 2018 she decided to launch Icarus Complex and fill a gap in the market: there is increasing talk across many media platforms about various parts of the climate issue, but there is no dedicated publication that gathers all of this discourse within one umbrella while targeting a mainstream audience.

Sérgio Alves is an art director and designer at Atelier d ́alves, a studio he founded in 2013 in Porto. Since 2017 he has been teaching at ESMAD - School of Media Art and Design. He has worked on several publications as an art director, such as the newspaper Jornal Universitário do Porto, Drama magazine and Comunicae journal. In 2016 he was the Art Director invited by Cofina Media to develop a special edition with The New York Times.

Madeleine Bazil is a filmmaker, writer, and creative producer whose storytelling practice considers, documents, and (re)maps personal and cultural understandings of memory, landscape, community, and justice. Her approach is rhizomatic and rooted in care and curiosity for people and for the more-than-human world. She believes that, in the words of Gwendolyn Brooks, ‘we are each other’s / magnitude and bond’. Her work has received support from Joya: AiR, Union Docs, and Likewise Impact Lab. Madeleine holds an MA in Documentary Arts from the University of Cape Town and an MA in English Literature from the University of St Andrews.

dorka plays in the overlapping spaces of design, art, and community. She approaches all her work as an exercise in storytelling, and researching things beyond their physical or temporal bounds. Collaboration and collective making enrich the self and are centred in her work. Play is the heart of her practice – an endeavour toward seeing with a child’s eye, tracing lines and living inside them.

Christina is a transdisciplinary artist whose practice explores relationships between living organisms, material systems, and shared experience. Her practice depends on the “each other”, the premise that the material that builds up our world is alive, and that our bodies work with theirs. Through food, natural materials, and biomaterial research, her work traces relations between human and non-human bodies across ecological and global systems.

Linda Förster is a student of English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. She joined Icarus Complex in 2024 as a research intern and writer. Driven by her personal activism, she explores how writing can translate into and catalyze climate action, and how the practical dimensions of environmentalism can be amplified by philosophical and ecocritical discourse. As a researcher, Linda is interested in bridging ideological and political divides in the climate movement, combining the scientific and the creative to build a global community. Besides writing, Linda enjoyed reading non-fiction, analogue photography, and long runs.

Melina works across communications, partnerships, and storytelling, with a background in International Relations and Digital Media informing her interest in climate, society, and the forces that shape our world. Much of her work is rooted in connecting people, ideas, and places, bringing different perspectives into conversation. Her interests extend into history and philosophy, fields she is pursuing through further study and through which she continues to explore questions of identity, belonging and how the past reverberates through the present.

Sophia Hoag is a Seattle-born journalist and fiction writer whose work explores the intricate relationships between people, place, and the natural world. Through environmental reporting and narrative storytelling, she examines the complex interdependencies shaping our ecosystems and communities, seeking to deepen awareness of the ways humans impact and are impacted by the natural world. She serves as a writer and social media ideator for Icarus Complex Magazine, Poetry Editor at The Hopper Magazine, and a Granta Fellow. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in The Lewiston Tribune, New Orleans Review, The Pinch, Swing the Fly Magazine, and elsewhere.

Vir is a spatial designer, urbanist, and writer. His work in urban design examines the systemic decisions that shape the fabric of cities and determine who gets to live where, driven by a commitment to ecology, public realm design, and a more just urban environment. His work has been featured in design publications such as ArchDaily and Architizer. He is also interested in the gaps in how human and more-than-human life coexist within cities. As a researcher and writer at Icarus Complex, he explores stories at the intersection of climate change and the built environment. Outside of this, he's drawn to documentary photography as another way of seeing and telling stories.

Delfina is a graphic designer born and raised in Argentine Patagonia. Growing up surrounded by its vast landscapes, her connection to nature became an essential part of how she views and understands the world. From an early age, she developed a keen interest in the humanities and creativity. These interests eventually led her to design, where she found a way to forge meaningful connections while exploring how communication and visual identity can help craft positive and purposeful messages. Curious and always eager to learn, she often spends her free time creating art and experimenting with various materials.

Aishwaryashree is an Art Director and researcher based between India and London, currently pursuing an MA in Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins. Her practice explores visual culture, technology, ecology, and systems through research-led design, moving between image-making, digital media, publishing, and experimental forms. Previously an Art Director at Vogue India, she explores how visual communication can make complex social and environmental questions tangible.
