Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Afsaneh Angelina Rafii

Afsaneh has been actively working in the magazine world since 2005. She served as both the editor of nico magazine and associate publisher of Twin magazine, and has passionately written about the creative industries since then. In 2018 she decided to launch Icarus Complex and fill a gap in the market: there is increasing talk across many media platforms about various parts of the climate issue, but there is no dedicated publication that gathers all of this discourse within one umbrella while targeting a mainstream audience.

Photo and Video Producer

Madeleine Bazil

Madeleine Bazil is a multidisciplinary artist and writer interested in memory, intimacy, and the ways we navigate worlds—real and imagined. Her directorial debut, Grandpa Ernest Speaks, has screened in film festivals globally and has been described as a ‘nuanced poetic representation of an intensely subjective experience’. As a photographer, she has exhibited in the UK, US, and South Africa. Her essays and criticism have appeared in Where The Leaves Fall, ArtThrob, and elsewhere, and her poetry has been anthologised and published in various journals. Her work is shaped by open questions of memory and of place, and how these questions shape identities and relationships—and she is consistently interested in creative, holistic, and non-anthropocentric understandings of the natural world. As Photo and Video Producer and editor for Icarus Complex, Madeleine sources, produces, and edits visual work for the magazine’s digital presence.

Social Media Manager

dorka szender-kisfaludy

dorka plays in the overlapping spaces of social design, art, and community. She was born and raised in Hungary, currently based in Scotland. Engaging with communities has become the heart of her practice, using art as a critical tool for addressing social & environmental causes. She approaches all her work as an exercise in storytelling, and researching things beyond their physical or temporal bounds. Play is the heart of dorka’s practice – an endeavour toward seeing with a child’s eye, tracing lines and living inside them.

Researcher

Linda Förster

Linda Förster is a student of English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. She joined Icarus Complex in 2024 as a research intern and writer. Driven by her personal activism, she explores how writing can translate into and catalyze climate action, and how the practical dimensions of environmentalism can be amplified by philosophical and ecocritical discourse. As a researcher, Linda is interested in bridging ideological and political divides in the climate movement, combining the scientific and the creative to build a global community. Besides writing, Linda enjoyed reading non-fiction, analogue photography, and long runs.
