Until the River Breathes follows the contested paths of the Liesbeek River and Black River through three communities in Cape Town.
As it winds through uneven landscapes, in various states of health, the river traces the city’s enduring socio-economic divides. Through personal stories, historical context, and Indigenous perspectives, the film explores how apartheid, forced removals, and modern development have cut people off from the land and each other. It asks what it means to repair those connections, and shows how the river can become a site of memory, resistance, and healing.
